Penalized by the progress of online sales, Corte Inglés, a famous Spanish chain of shopping centers, announced "
a reorganization of the company
" providing for several thousand voluntary departures, union sources said on Saturday.
The management gathered the unions on Saturday to inform them of "
a surplus of staff of between 3,000 and 3,500 people both in shopping centers and in offices,
" said Antonio Perez, secretary general of Fetico, one of the four unions represented in Corte Inglés.
These are voluntary departures and at the national level, underlined the union representative, the group has about a hundred department stores in Spain as well as two establishments in Portugal.

Through this reorganization plan, the Corte Inglés aims, indicates the intersyndicale in a press release, "
the viability of the company, its positioning in a changing market, the reorganization of the world of 'retail' (sales) and its new dimension after the impact of online sales
”.
The group, a true Spanish institution created in 1940 in Madrid, is one of the leading private employers in the country, with 63,000 employees in its “
shopping centers
” branch alone
(excluding the insurance, travel, etc. sector).
