The 60th wine sale of the Hospices de Nuits-Saint-Georges, little sister of the famous auctions of Beaune, in Côte-d'Or, reached the total sum of € 1.9 million on Sunday, the organizers announced.
114 “
pieces
” (228-liter barrels) - 112 in red wines and 2 in whites - were auctioned at the Château du Clos de Vougeot.
This sale, sponsored by academician Erik Orsenna, aims to finance the hospital and the retirement home managed by the Hospices de Nuits.

Like Beaune, the Hospices de Nuits are indeed a “
winegrower's hospital
”: the medical service is financed by an area of 12 hectares of vines donated over the years.
In 2020, the sale of 121 pieces had brought in 1.6 million euros.
The average price of coins this year reached 16,868 euros, compared to 13,179 euros in 2020.
The “
charity coin
”, a prestigious wine barrel traditionally intended for a specific charity, brought in 49,380 euros thanks to around fifty donations.
This piece, a Nuits-Saint-Georges 1er cru Les Saint-Georges, made from 70-year-old vines, was sold to benefit the Institut Pasteur's research on influenza virus mutations, which can also be useful for Covid-19 variants.
Health crisis requires, the public had been limited but the number of buyers had to remain "
roughly the same
", in particular thanks to the possibility of online and telephone auctions, had assured the press in February François Poher, director of Hospices.
Thus, the director had said that he was "
not worried
" about the success of the sale, especially since that of Beaune had resulted, despite the Covid, in the establishment of a new record for "
the charity coin
".
