"The offers are many and varied": in France, 5G creates jobs

2021-03-22T17:35:05.700Z

From satellite designer to cable installer and customer relations, 5G will lead to thousands of new jobs

The numbers are staggering!

The new 5G telecom technology will create 22 million jobs worldwide, including nearly 400,000 in France alone, by 2035. It will represent a windfall for operators, suppliers, equipment manufacturers and other content developers. of $ 3,500 billion (according to an IHS Markit study for the American operator Qualcomm).

Some examples?

The Chinese Huawei is investing at least 200 million euros in Alsace to produce equipment, with 300 jobs in the first place.

Qualcomm is opening a research center in Lannion (Côtes-d'Armor) dedicated to 5G and even to the future 6G.

A new center by the Swedish company Ericsson, still specializing in this new technology, will also generate 300 jobs in Saclay (Essonne).

So what are the jobs that this new technology will boost?

In the sky…

Are you interested in making 5G satellites?

We need you !

“We are going to launch new generation, ultra-thin satellites that will look like piles of plates,” enthuses Didier Le Boulc'h, one of the managers of Thales Aliena Space.

It evokes the American billionaire Elon Musk (Tesla), at the origin of some of these 5G satellites, and the future constellation of 600 devices in our sky.

He also predicts hiring in the key.

"To manufacture these high-tech devices, we will need specific skills in radio frequencies, solar panels, batteries, altitude control, mechanics, with an engineer level

(Editor's note: average gross salary 5,000 euros)

", explains Didier Le Boulc ' h.

“But it will also require specialized workers, technicians to mass-produce the equipment, logisticians, salespeople, buyers, business developers,” he adds.

There, the gross salary range is between 2,500 and 3,500 euros depending on experience.

On earth…

“We will also have to develop equipment on the ground,” explains Stéphane Anjuere, from Thales.

The new 5G technology rhymes with more connectivity and speed, but also the securing of networks and therefore the construction of data centers.

We will have a huge need for cybersecurity specialists (IT systems, IT engineers, e-learning).

“All this requires a bac + 5 training, master in data science, with the expectation of an average gross salary of 4000 euros per month.

Many schools and in-house companies are already developing these new professions.

This is confirmed by Olivier Colson, Network HR Director, CIO and B to B at Bouygues Telecom: “Job offers are many and varied, at all levels, from the most sophisticated to the most practical in the field, but cybersecurity is at the heart of our concerns.

In total, we plan to integrate 350 new employees in the fields of information technology and telecoms.

Our credo for hiring at Bouygues Telecom: team up, be entrepreneurial, speak truthfully and grow!

"

“It is indeed necessary to lay fiber optic cables, underlines Stéphane Anjuere, to manage and maintain the networks on the ground and this opens up jobs for technicians.

There will be something for everyone… ”With a good average salary: 3,500 euros gross.

For the positions of 5G antenna assemblers, "you need technical skills but also human qualities, not to be dizzy when working at the top of pylons, buildings or water towers", depicts Stéphane Dupont, center expert manager Construction at Randstad.

"I like to work outdoors, to move around, to move"

“You also have to know how to deal with the weather and bad weather, accept travel, shift schedules, work in pairs and in teams,” he continues.

There are many skills, while constantly supporting the safety harness: handling technological tools, making technical adjustments.

These unusual working conditions appealed to Romain, 28, a 5G network deployment technician at Circet.

“In my job, you have to scrupulously respect safety rules, be in good physical condition, be meticulous and rigorous: you work 30 m from the ground.

"

After starting out in a design office, he preferred to take the air: "I like to work outdoors, to move around, to move," says this young graduate in a telecom network license.

“It is also fascinating to see the technological evolution unfolding before my eyes: 2G, 3G, 4G and now 5G”.

In his rapidly developing field, Romain knows he has the future ahead of him.

Who knows, maybe he will know the 6, 7 or 8G?
