Right to disconnect: some business rules

Four years after its establishment, the right to disconnect is more relevant than ever.

The law stipulates that an employee can turn off all digital tools outside of working hours.

He therefore does not have to answer his employer once the computer is closed.

The fact remains that with the switch to teleworking, it is difficult to imagine radically cutting yourself off from the office when the only contact with the boss and colleagues is by e-mail, instant messaging or videoconference.

In 2020, according to a study by Eléas, more than two-thirds of French executives still used their professional digital tools in the evening and at weekends.

Faced with this observation, several groups have implemented rules to help their employees find a balance between professional obligations and personal life.

Talkspirit, software publisher for companies, has gathered examples of guidelines established by various companies.

They are offered in a guide of around twenty pages, intended for managers and employees alike, to reduce the time spent on screens.

Establish strict hours

“During discussions with our clients, we noted that many of them were looking for a way for their employees to report their inactivity,” says Philippe Pinault, co-founder of Talkspirit.

It is obviously above all for managers to reassure employees that disconnection is possible and even desirable after a while.

They must be exemplary in practice, ”he explains.

Thus at La Poste, an alert window is displayed on the computer during disconnection hours to suggest that the sending of the email be postponed.

At the German Daimler (Mercedes), we have chosen a more radical approach: the company automatically deletes the email received during holidays.

The sender is informed of this, before being redirected to another person who can respond to his request.

The guide also recommends establishing strict disconnection times, like Volkswagen, which blocks access to its servers in the evening, or to analyze connection flows to alert employees in the event of screen consumption. too high.

The next challenge is to further restrict computer and smartphone use even for leisure time.
