Despite the corona crisis, more than half a trillion dollars were invested in renewable energies for the first time in 2020. In the ranking of the World Economic Forum, Germany again does not land in the top group.

According to a study by the World Economic Forum, the energy transition is making progress worldwide: Last year, investments in a more sustainable energy supply exceeded the $ 500 billion mark for the first time despite the pandemic.

92 of 115 countries examined have made progress since 2010, according to the annual energy transition report by the World Economic Forum (WEF) foundation.

In the WEF's Energy Transition Index, Germany moved up from 20th to 18th year-on-year.

However, according to the WEF, progress in Germany has been limited since 2012.

"All of the leading ten national economies have significantly improved their ecological sustainability, in particular by reducing the carbon load in the energy mix, supported by strong political commitment and investments in the energy transition," the report says.

The number of people without electricity has decreased from 1.2 billion to 800 million since 2010.

At the top of the energy transition rankings are Sweden, Norway and Denmark.

Switzerland and Finland fell from second and third to fourth and sixth.

Austria moved up from sixth to fifth.

The US was 24th, China 68th, and India 87th.

The index compares the energy systems in 115 countries.

It takes into account, for example, economic development and growth, environmental sustainability and energy security, as well as the willingness of governments to move towards safe, sustainable, affordable and inclusive energy systems.
