Due to a voluntary disclosure, SAP escaped a heavier penalty: The German software company reached an agreement with US authorities on a fine of eight million dollars for doing business with Iran.

The German software company SAP has agreed with the US authorities on a fine of eight million dollars for illegal exports to Iran.

The Justice Department in Washington announced on Thursday.

Accordingly, the company avoided a significantly more severe penalty by filing a voluntary disclosure.

It was the first ever case in which a company used a US Department of Justice facility.

It applies in the event that goods are illegally delivered to countries that are subject to sanctions.

If the companies report the wrongdoing themselves in full before the authorities find out about them, they can expect a fine.

SAP has been accused of illegally exporting software to the Persian country in thousands of cases over the past seven years.

The settlement now closed means that no charges will be brought against the group.
