Bill and Melinda Gates: This is how expensive divorce can be

2021-05-05T02:17:35.866Z

Russian oligarchs, Australian media czars: When such rich couples as the Gates end a marriage, an unbelievable amount of money can flow. That shows a list of the most expensive divorces.

By far the largest fortune that had to

be shared

between spouses so far was that of Amazon founder

Jeff Bezos

and

MacKenzie Scott

(in the picture still together in 2018).

In January 2019, they announced their separation, at the time the total was around $ 136 billion.

The agreement was reached three months later: MacKenzie got four percent of the Amazon shares, which was then worth

35 billion dollars

.

However, Jeff Bezos' fortune alone is now significantly higher than the joint before the divorce.

After all, thanks to the corona pandemic, Amazon is once again significantly more valuable than it was two years ago.

The Bloomberg news agency currently estimates it at $ 197 billion.

Although MacKenzie Scott - who has been remarried since March - donated more than seven billion dollars to good causes in 2019 and 2020, her fortune has also grown considerably as a result of the Amazon boom.

Bloomberg currently puts its assets at $ 59.9 billion.

Much less money was involved when Formula 1 billionaire

Bernie Ecclestone

divorced

his wife

Slavica

(pictured here in 2004) - the media estimated Slavica received

a billion pounds

.

However, a lot of money apparently flowed in the other direction afterwards.

In connection with the Munich bribery process, newspapers reported in 2014, citing court documents, that Slavica Ecclestone paid her ex-husband $ 100 million every year.

This unusual regulation of maintenance for him through her should apply for ten years after the divorce - and has to do with the fact that Bernie's assets have been parked in a family foundation since the 1990s, whose distributions go to Slavica, among others.

In any case, the speed at which the two were divorced was remarkable: the process was over in just 58 seconds.

One of the most expensive divorces is still that of

media billionaire Rupert Murdoch

from his second wife

Anna Torv

(seen here in 1998) in 1999 - but it is unclear whether this is really the case.

Based on the native Australian's fortune of 3.9 billion dollars at the time, the media reported that Anna Torv had received 1.7 billion dollars - and this is how Wikipedia still lists it in a corresponding list.

Research by the Guardian suggests, however, that it could have been significantly less - only 110 million dollars, which are said to have flowed in cash, seem relatively secure.

What is known, however, is the amount that US-born

hedge fund manager Chris Hohn

had to pay in 2014: the equivalent of $

530 million

- half of the family's wealth at the time.

previously offered - only apparently generously - a quarter of the fortune.

She refused and insisted on what she was rightfully entitled to.

For at least a few months, the separation of the Russian

oligarch Dmitrij Rybolowlew

and his ex-wife

Elena

seemed

to be the most expensive divorce ever: A Swiss court ruled in 2014 that Elena was entitled to a

good four billion Swiss francs

- the equivalent of 3.3 billion euros .

However, an appeals court cut it down significantly the following year, to

just under 565 million francs

.

In autumn 2015, the two then agreed on the terms of their divorce - and ended all legal proceedings.

The details of this agreement are unknown.

.

Allegedly, she is said to have received - according to the agreement -

a one-off payment of $ 2.5 billion

in the gossip press because of her pronounced penchant for cosmetic

surgeries

, and

annual payments of $ 100 million

until 2012 were planned.

The total amount of the agreement is $ 3.8 billion.

Steve and Elaine Wyne worked

together to

create

a casino empire.

And they were married twice - they divorced for the second time in 2010.

"Forbes" puts the total

amount

Steve had to cede to Elaine at

$ 850 million

Harold Hamm

, founder of the oil company Continental Resources, and

Sue Ann Arnall were

still a married couple.

They divorced three years later - and he wrote a check for just under

$ 975 million

.

Sue Ann stashed the check, but tried to win a larger part of the then 13.7 billion dollar fortune, lost - and finally cashed the check.

How much money

will flow

in the divorce of

Bill

and

Melinda Gates

(picture from 2018) is still unclear.

They were married for 27 years.

Bloomberg puts Bill Gates' net

worth at $ 146 billion

, making him the fourth richest person in the world.
