Major Australian Banks Report Online Service Outages

The US service provider Akamai is believed to be behind the recent internet blackouts, according to Virgin Australia, one of the companies affected.


The main Australian banks on Thursday reported outages affecting their online services, applications and websites as they tried to determine the cause as quickly as possible.

We understand that some of our customers are currently having problems accessing our services,

" Australia's largest bank, Commonwealth Bank, told AFP.

This problem affects multiple organizations, including many large banks

The Akamai service provider involved

Financial institutions Westpac, ANZ, ME Bank have all reported issues affecting their mobile apps or online banking products.

The outages started around 2:10 p.m. local time (6:10 a.m. in France) according to the Downdetector website.

Australian bank ANZ has told customers "

at this time we don't know what time this will be fixed, please try to log in in an hour

."

The outages were caused by an issue at service provider Akamai, said Virgin Australia, one of the affected companies. The airline said it "is

one of many organizations affected by the outages in Akamai's content delivery system

," adding that everything is being done to ensure that the outage that lasted about an hour does not recur.
