The number of bankers in the European Union who earned more than € 1million remained stable in 2019, but the UK has seen some of its wealthiest join the continent because of Brexit, the UK revealed on Wednesday. European Banking Authority (EBA).
A total of 4,963 EU bankers received remuneration above one million euros in 2019. In 2018, they were 4,938.

The United Kingdom continues to concentrate the vast majority of them since approximately 70% of these high incomes lived across the Channel in 2019, that is to say before the effective departure of the United Kingdom from the European Union.
Nevertheless, compared to 2018, the country saw the number of its wealthy bankers decrease by 95 people, a decrease of 2.63%.
More wealthy bankers on the continent
This development can be explained by "
the relocation of employees (...) as part of the preparations for Brexit
", notes the Banking Authority, specifying that the fall in the pound sterling had no influence. significant.
Conversely, the number of bankers who earned more than one million euros in 2019, that is to say before the outbreak of the Covid-19 pandemic, increased by 17% in Italy (with 241 people), by 15 % in France (270 people) and 9% in Germany (492 people).

In addition to Brexit, these increases are also explained by "
good financial results
" and by restructuring which led to high severance pay, says the report of the European Banking Authority. More than two-thirds of these high incomes earned between one and two million euros over the year. A Briton however won between 64 and 65 million euros, the highest level since the start of this statistic in 2014.
