Did you know that history took place in the city of Haifa on September 1?

The new Gulf port, one of the largest infrastructure projects in Israel, opened its gates yesterday and will launch a new and fascinating world in the port industry in Israel.

Almost all trade in the country is currently driven through the ports deployed on the shoreline and the opening of the Gulf port (the first of two new ports established in Israel, along with the southern port) in which about NIS 5.5 billion has been invested in advanced infrastructure and operating equipment. Thanks to the new ports, Israel will be at the forefront of the port world in the eastern basin of the Mediterranean Sea. The new port and its operations meet strict international standards, including the use of green technologies and special measures to reduce environmental pollution.

And here are some numbers worth knowing: The planning of the Gulf port began in 2005 and its construction in 2015, when the entire project was managed by the Israel Ports Company's new ports development director and employed about 500 workers. A logistics center is also expected to be built near the port, located in a modern industrial park and in total, the port and the activities around it are expected to create employment for about 6,000 men and women. Its contribution to the Haifa metropolitan area is estimated at NIS 1.5 billion. For

the first time, the Gulf port will allow huge cargo ships, 400 meters long and 62 meters wide, carrying 18,000 containers, to anchor in Israel. Something unparalleled in Israel to date and eight bridge cranes, one of the largest in the world today, have been installed.

Yitzhak Blumenthal, CEO of the Israel Ports Company, said: "The opening of the Gulf port is good news for the Israeli economy, and will revolutionize the entire economy. It is the newest port in the world, the latest in port technology. This has a dramatic impact on everyone, from manufacturers to the Israeli consumer, in reducing the cost of living, as almost all products, including the raw materials used by Israeli industry, come through the gates of seaports.

In just six years, the Israel Ports Company has succeeded in leading and promoting a huge infrastructure project, which will lead to competition in the port industry that the entire economy is waiting for. The opening of the port accelerates the process of port reform and deepens competition in the field of container ships as well, which will lead to an improvement and efficiency in the level of service in ports in Israel for the benefit of importers, exporters and various industry factors. The opening of the port will meet the needs of the economy, ensure Israel's readiness to absorb the giant ships and allow Israel to prepare for the changes that are taking place in the maritime trade industry. "

Uzi Yitzhaki, Chairman of the Israel Ports Company: "The opening of the Gulf Port is another step towards the completion of the reform in the ports industry and the beginning of a new era for the Israeli economy and the general public.

"This is one of the largest and most complex infrastructure projects established in Israel, which I accompanied at the planning and tenders stage as Director General of the Ministry of Transportation.
