Hollywood star Leonardo DiCaprio invests in two companies that produce meat in laboratories.
As the two start-ups announced, the US actor bought shares in the Israeli company Aleph Farms and the Dutch company Mosa Meat, which manufacture beef from the cells of cows in the laboratory - without slaughtering the animals.
The Oscar winner also wants to work as a consultant for the companies.
"One of the most effective ways in the fight against the climate crisis is to change our food system," DiCaprio is quoted in a statement from the two companies.
The companies would offer the opportunity "to satisfy the global demand for beef and at the same time to solve one of the most pressing problems of the current industrial beef production." How much money the Hollywood actor has invested in the company is not clear from the communication.
DiCaprio has been committed to environmental and climate protection for a long time.
The "Titanic" star has already invested in the Californian company Beyond Meat, which makes vegetable burgers and sausages.
Global meat consumption is considered to be a driver of climate change - primarily because of the enormous amount of land used for factory farming and the associated emissions, including methane.
Artificially produced meat from the laboratory, also known as in-vitro meat, is supposed to remedy this, according to the proponents.
