The American Professor of Applied Economics at Johns Hopkins University, Steve H. Hanke, described the Turkish lira as a "sinking ship" and that the head of the Turkish regime, Recep Tayyip Erdogan, is its "steward", blaming the latter for the collapse of the currency and the decline of the economy in his country.
"The Turkish lira is a sinking ship and Erdogan is the captain of the ship," Hanki was quoted by the Turkish newspaper Zaman as saying in a tweet, adding that "the lira has reached its lowest level ever thanks to Erdogan's crazy financial ideas and illogically low interest rates."
Hanki's tweet included a cartoon depicting the Turkish lira sinking into the sea.
It is noteworthy that Hanke gives lectures at Johns Hopkins University, which is one of the most prestigious American universities. Hanke also publishes his articles in Forbes magazine. During the first nine months of this year, the Turkish lira became the most declining currency against the dollar, as it lost 16 percent of its value this year and exceeded monetary inflation. On an annual basis, 19.60 percent.
