"Most of the criticism of the tax benefits we receive has been legitimate," says Yaniv Gerti candidly.

Name

: Yaniv Gerti, CEO of Intel Israel, 54 years old.

Who I am

:

I

like interacting with people. One of the things that made me successful was knowing how to find the right people and run with them. Then the most significant breakthroughs happen.

Roots

: Dad's family went through the Holocaust in Bulgaria and lived in the second largest city in the country. When the Jews were deported, the king arrested him under the influence of the church and they fled to a village in the mountains. They came to Jaffa with Dad and from there moved to an entire village in Tel Aviv and opened a pharmacy.

Mother's parents, who were tailors, came to Israel before the war from Poland and lived in Tel Aviv, most of their family perished in the Holocaust. The parents recognized each other on a date. Father was a dentist and mother a teacher.

My childhood

: In the center of Holon, in the older area, not far from us, the family lived, so I spent a lot of time with my cousins. At some point we moved to Tel Aviv and studied in high school School of Practical Engineering Ramat Aviv, into the sciences, Physical and Technological learned electronics and robotics. I started out in high tech video games, when I persuaded his parents to buy me an Atari, and at age 16 was a home computer.

Military service

: Family Of doctors and pharmacists, I was the black sheep who went to study computer engineering in the military reserve at Tel Aviv University. During my studies I was the caretaker of Scitex and experienced dismissals there for the first time.

In the last two years of my degree I taught math and electronics in the high school where I studied, an empowering experience. There is something about being able to shape young people and give them tools that is unmatched.

I enlisted in the Navy and was involved in Corps projects in Raphael.

I extended the service a bit and while I started studying for a master's degree in business administration.

When I was released I promised myself that I would never be part of a large organization.

Look where I am today.

Orckit

: After graduating, I joined Orckit, which dealt with home modems, and had some amazing experiences there. I started when the direction was technological, then not talking about the Internet but about selling the technology, and while working on us on the fact that our technology can be used for fast internet connection and it has become dominant in the field.

Riding a wave and leading technology in the world, is an amazing experience that I wish for everyone. I was the 30th employee in the company and when I left, after four years, we reached 900 employees. From there I moved to Optibase, a long-established company in the field of digital video in the transition to video on networks and I was vice president of marketing. I was there for almost three years, then for a short time in a communications company and then I came to Anwara.

Irit Axelrod

: My wife, an architect, has her own office.

We were in the same class in high school and at the end of school we parted ways.

17 years later, when I was divorced without children, we met by chance and stayed together.

We have a 14-year-old child and we live in Tel Aviv.

Anwara

: A startup that developed chipsets for wireless communications. I was CEO and vice president and was sent on its behalf to the United States, where I was actually the company's branch. Irit and I flew there together and lived in San Francisco. In 2004, Intel acquired the company for the technology, which was based on the fourth generation of cellulars.I was responsible for the field of wireless communication, GPS, WFI, and since 2010 I have lived on the line to Israel.

USA

: Until 2017 our son was enrolled in two schools, in the USA and in Israel. We divided life between the two places, and when Maxine Fesberg retired from Intel Israel for the first time, we returned to Israel. I loved life in the US. We lived in San Francisco, which is essentially an immigrant city, a melting pot, easy to feel at home in. Thanks to the fact that we also lived in Israel, returning here was natural.

Intel

: When I was appointed I got into the shoes of a very dominant CEO. Who did a lot inside and outside Intel. Some things are understood mentally and not emotionally and I understood Intel's impact on the Israeli economy only when I became CEO and connected Intel Israel to a global company, only then did I realize this power.

Today, after acquiring Mobilai, we have 14,000 employees in Israel, out of 110,000 worldwide. Two years ago, the Shmuel Ne'eman Institute conducted a study and discovered that there are another 50,000 households that make a living from this activity.

Tax benefits: Most of the criticism of the tax benefits we receive was legitimate, the mix of supporters and opponents was reasonable. I work for Intel and I am Israeli and it is worth discussing how the state distributes our tax money. Israel must be competitive and encourage investment, and Intel, since entering Israel, has acquired companies worth over $ 20 billion and invested over $ 20 billion here, huge sums on every scale, not to mention our exports estimated at billions of dollars, and workers 'and suppliers' circles.

It all comes with a lot of pride and a sense of responsibility. For a company to be successful it needs to be rooted within a returning company and in places where we can bring value.

Chip shortage 1

: We have been in a digital transformation for years and the Corona has accelerated it even more when we realized that we need more than one computer, faster browsing, and that almost any service can be done online. In Israel, this acceleration was particularly important because it helped reduce digital disparities in distance learning, medical services and government. When you lift the hood you see chips. Dozens of chips are also involved in our conversation now.

The chip market kept itself in balance between supply and demand and suddenly there was an insane flood of unexpected demand. 20 years ago, setting up a chip manufacturing plant cost about $ 1 billion, today the cost stands at between $ 10 and $ 15 billion. 20 years ago there were about 20 such companies, today there are only three chip companies in the world because of the high set-up cost, the cost of developing the technology and the huge cash flow they require. Intel expands plant in Kiryat Gat, and establishes plants in USA, New Mexico and Europe.

Chip shortage 2

: The Biden administration passed a law to encourage the silicon industries out of the importance it sees in the field of digital security.

Countries invest in manufacturing infrastructure out of the need to maintain digital accessibility so that they do not have to rely on others.

There are companies in the world that develop chips for themselves and outsource them.

Until recently we only manufactured our own chips, and following Corona, our CEO, Pete Glasinger, decided that we would also manufacture for other companies, and so it turns out that we manufacture chips for our competitors as well and that's fine.

Corona

: We did not lay off any workers, we did not take anyone out to the IDF, we continued to pay suppliers even when they could not come with goods and our exports increased to eight billion dollars. Physically. Even now we're working on a hybrid model.

Apple:

Competitors. We believe the PC world has an advantage over Apple's Macs. They live in the world of the most expensive computers, but our technology and solutions are better.

Elder Lake

: New Line never processor chip architecture, new technology, developed and manufactured in Kiryat Gat launched last week. we also have communications processors and new graphics processors born in Israel.

reorganization

: Intel has missed some of its goals in recent years and is in the process of change led by the CEO, who left the company a few years ago after being chief technology officer, and returned to manage it. But most of them remain. The

company is undergoing some changes: opening production gates to outside companies, developing our products for the developer community to use hardware and software, giving them tools to self-direct the engine and focus in places where we have technological superiority, like Eldar Lake.

(Photo: Reuven Castro)

Mobilai

: An Intel subsidiary focused on autonomous vehicles. We have decided that safety will not be its marketing advantage because it must be an integral part of the technology and, therefore, our knowledge of safety is open to everyone to use. So our technology and leadership is the business card and not the safety.

I drove myself in an autonomous vehicle and the experience is amazing, especially in the way it is possible to see through the interface what is happening inside the computer. See how the artificial intelligence brain works. In the last quarter, Mobilai's sales increased by 40%.

Unicorn Bubble

: To become a unicorn a company needs to have a solid technological base. Even if the value is inflated, only companies that stand firm on their feet will survive and most of them will.

Leisure: Sports - not just doing, but mostly watching.

When we were in the US fell in love with sports that make me get up at four o'clock in the morning to watch the games. I finished the baseball season and now I'm in football and basketball. I'm a fan of teams of San Francisco, Golden State basketball, Port-Niners football and San Francisco Giants baseball.

Viewing Future: I at Intel, despite my early statements that I will not be in a large organization, because in the end, wisdom is not the size of the organization and the role, but the ability to continue riding waves that change people's lives, the ability to influence.
