The deadline for paying the housing tax and the public audiovisual contribution is set for this Monday evening if you pay by check, transfer, cash, credit card.

But be careful, if the amount of your tax is greater than 300 euros, you will have to pay online via your personal space on impots.gouv.fr.

Taxpayers who choose this option have until Saturday, November 20 at midnight to make the payment, which will be effective on November 25.

Those who have opted for direct debit will also see the amount debited from their account on that date.

Some 80% of French households (or 22,792,361 households in 2020) are already fully exempt from housing tax, the flagship tax reform of the Macron five-year term.

The remaining 20% of taxpayers benefit this year from a first rebate of 30%, which will increase to 65% in 2022 and 100% in 2023.

Don't forget the royalty

But beware! Just because you didn't pay council tax last year doesn't mean you get 100% relief this year. It depends on your reference tax income, which must not exceed certain ceilings (27,761 euros for one share, for example). Thus, in 2020, 800,000 households again paid housing tax despite having benefited from a reduction the previous year. Conversely, a million households went in the space of a year from a full-rate housing tax to a total exemption in just one year.

In all cases, all households continue to receive a council tax notice, at least online.

The sum to be paid can therefore be equal to 0, but around 23 million households still have to pay the public audiovisual contribution (138 euros in metropolitan France, 88 euros overseas).

On the other hand, all owners of second homes remain subject to the housing tax without relief.

In this case, the payment deadline is December 15 (if you do not use a dematerialized means of payment and within the limit of 300 euros) with a period allowed until December 20 for an online payment.

The amount will be debited on December 27, as in the case of a debit at maturity.
