The enemy of my enemy is my ally?
The Greens expressly do not want to follow this logic in the case of the controversial Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline.
Although the party rejects the construction and commissioning of the Baltic Sea pipeline, it also opposes attempts by the USA to stop the project with punitive measures.
The Greens foreign politician Omid Nouripour has criticized the new US sanctions against the Baltic Sea gas pipeline Nord Stream 2. "The new US sanctions are also unacceptable for those who oppose Nord Stream," Nouripour told Reuters on Tuesday evening. "We Greens in particular, who have always fought the pipeline, cannot understand what kind of friendship is sought here, where friends are sanctioned when they do business with third parties," he added. "The pipeline is and will remain a wrong German decision - not an American one."
The US had previously imposed further sanctions in connection with the controversial Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline.
The punitive measures target a ship and the Russian-related company Transadria Ltd., as Foreign Minister Antony Blinken announced on Monday.
Trouble in Washington over German camouflage foundation
But there are also new upsets on the other side of the Atlantic. According to a “Handelsblatt” report, the reason for this is that the “Climate and Environmental Protection” foundation set up by the state government of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania and Nord Stream 2 AG was apparently actively involved in the completion of the pipeline. The name of the foundation is misleading: Among other things, it is the owner of a ship that is involved in the final work to complete the line. This is the "blue ship" that also appears in the US government's latest sanctions report to Congress.
The report does not name the foundation directly, but indicates that the ship belongs to an organization that is linked to the "German government," the newspaper writes.
The activities of the Mecklenburg Foundation, which previously took place under the radar of the public, have also met with sharp criticism among the Greens.
"We want this dispute to be decided by European authorities in accordance with European law," said Reinhard Bütikofer, European politician for the Greens.
