Rhineland-Palatinate becomes a donor country

In the state financial equalization system, Rhineland-Palatinate has long been one of the financially weak states supported by Bavaria and Co. But that will now change suddenly.

The list of those who have profited from the biontech boom is getting longer and longer.

Not only the cities of Mainz and Idar-Oberstein benefit from the billions in profits of the pharmaceutical company Biontech - thanks to the vaccine company, the state is also recording significantly higher tax revenues than usual this year.

The financial blessing is even likely to be so extensive that Rhineland-Palatinate will probably be classified as "financially strong" this year in the state financial equalization, said Finance Minister Doris Ahnen (SPD) in Mainz.

She called it "good news."

The minister said that the reason was generally »positive economic developments«.

She is not allowed to provide any information about individual taxpayers, but Biontech's tax payments are the main reason.

Doubling of the number of employees

In the financial equalization of the 16 federal states, Rhineland-Palatinate has so far been one of eleven recipient countries.

Last year, the country received 334 million euros from this compensation.

"We assume that this source of income will now disappear," said Ahnen.

The system provides that financially weak countries receive compensation allocations from financially strong countries.

The calculation is based on the average financial strength per inhabitant.

Local finances are also included.

The state capital Mainz, which has been heavily indebted since the mid-1980s, is expected to achieve a surplus of 1.09 billion euros by the end of the year thanks to Biontech's trade tax income.

An increase of 490.8 million euros is expected for 2022.

The state and the state capital also hope to benefit from the company's development in the future.

Biontech wants to invest one billion euros in expanding its office and laboratory capacities in Mainz.

The number of employees on site is expected to increase from 1,800 to 4,000.
