On paper, the goal of a green tire seems simple.
Michelin is committed to producing a tire that is “100% sustainable, throughout its life cycle”.
The leaders of the world leader recalled this Thursday in Clermont-Ferrand.
The industry is a compendium of what conservationists are fighting against. The tire contains 24% natural rubber derived from hevea (activity synonymous with deforestation for the European Commission), 25% synthetic rubber and carbon black from petrochemicals, but also silica, textiles, additives , metal… Its production uses a lot of solvents and water. It generates a large amount of waste (1.6 billion tires discarded each year). Industry is energy intensive and emits a lot of CO2, this being increased by the transport of raw materials and finished products. And tire consumption is continuing.
"The world car fleet will double in the next twenty years"
, emphasizes Florent Ménégaux, president.
