In view of the stresses caused by the corona pandemic, Bavaria has launched a Federal Council initiative to increase the salaries of intensive care workers for 2022.

"Bavaria is calling for the federal government to double salaries for intensive care workers," said Prime Minister Markus Söder (CSU) on Tuesday.

"In 2022 there should be a temporary wage tax exemption and an extended care premium," he said.

With the Federal Council initiative, the states can influence federal legislation.

In order for a corresponding bill to be introduced in the Bundestag, it would first need a majority in the Bundesrat.

The Free State called for a timely increase in the disposable net income for both intensive care workers and nurses with comparable clinical workloads.

At the request of the Bavarian state government, it should apply for at least one year.

In addition, surcharges in the entire care sector would have to be tax-free.

"That would be an overdue sign of appreciation," said the CSU boss.
