France wants to secure its access to strategic metals

ANALYSIS - The executive is working on the creation of a fund that would invest in mines, in order to guarantee supplies to industrialists.


By replacing heat engines with electric motors in cars, or coal-fired power plants with wind turbines, the energy transition will reduce France's - and Europe's - dependence on fossil fuels.

But other dependencies will emerge:

"The technological innovations developed to support the energy transition call on critical or strategic metals"

, recalls the IFP (French Petroleum Institute) Énergies Nouvelles.

“The world after will be carbon-free, but not without metals

,” summarizes Philippe Varin.

The former boss of the professional organization France Industrie and large groups such as PSA, Corus or Suez, on Monday submitted a report to the government on "securing the supply of mineral raw materials to the industry".
