Moderna plans to sell at least $19 billion in Covid vaccines in 2022

Believing that the virus will evolve towards an endemic phase, the pharmaceutical group anticipates significant sales this year.


The American pharmaceutical group Moderna has already received orders for 19 billion dollars of its vaccine against Covid-19 in 2022 and options for around 3 billion additional dollars, according to a press release released Thursday.

Discussions for the next two years

The laboratory is currently in discussions for additional sales in 2022 but also in 2023, including a version of the vaccine more specifically intended to fight against the Omicron variant.

In 2021, Moderna generated $18.5 billion in revenue, including $17.7 billion from the sale of 807 million doses of vaccines.

The group, in deficit since its creation in 2010 until 2020, reaped the benefits: it generated a net profit of 12.2 billion dollars last year.

Moderna's two-dose vaccine, Spikevax, was urgently authorized in December 2020 in the United States before receiving the green light from more than 70 other countries.

It was fully approved by the United States Medicines Agency at the end of January for people over 18 years old.

Boosted by the success of its Covid-19 vaccine which uses messenger RNA (mRNA) technology, Moderna is now testing this technology in 44 programs intended to treat or prevent various diseases, 25 of which are in clinical trials. .

Pfizer, which sold $36.8 billion of its own anti-Covid vaccine developed with German biotech BioNTech in 2021, plans to sell another $32 billion this year.
