The surge in electricity prices to levels almost never seen has made an unexpected victim: EDF.
The operator of the French nuclear fleet, which produces megawatt hours at low cost, should be the big winner of the surge in prices.
It is not so.
EDF must indeed buy back a lot of electricity on the wholesale markets.
This is the consequence of the government's desire to limit soaring prices for EDF customers (businesses and households).
The state has asked it to resell to its competitors more than expected nuclear electricity at low prices, as part of a mechanism called Arenh.
This measure has contributed to reducing the rise in the regulated electricity tariff from 40% to 4% on February 1, and to moderating the surge in prices for businesses.
