Rami Levy: "The price of tomatoes will reach NIS 20 per kilo"

According to Levy, it is the chains that are currently subsidizing the prices of tomatoes, which are expected to skyrocket.

Why does this happen and how much does it cost us?

We went out to check and learned: it's happening because of the cold from the last few weeks - and it still does not cost us compared to how much it will cost us soon

Are tomato prices on the rise as well?

Anyone who has recently visited a supermarket or market has probably already noticed the rise in the price of tomatoes, although some food chains are planning to absorb the rise in price at least for now.

Eyal Ravid, the controlling owner and CEO of the Victory chain

, responded to our request and said that the price of a kilogram of tomatoes at Victory is NIS 2.90.

When we asked how he sells at a price that is considered relatively cheap he replied: "Tomato is the queen of salad, lose on it, this is life."

The obvious question is why tomato prices always skyrocket before the holidays, Ravid replied that in this case it is a shortage in the whole area due to the weather, he said: "There are no tomatoes in Israel, no in Jordan, not even in Turkey and not even in Greece."

responded to Walla!

As follows: "The price of the tomato jumped to NIS 7.5 from NIS 4.5 last week. This is an increase of about 66%. The reason for the increase is the cold that caused the tomatoes not to ripen and therefore they did not turn red. "Days are supposed to lower customs and then the price may go down. At the moment we are selling at a loss, half of the chain sells at 6.90 and even less, at prices between NIS 3.90-5.90."

"In the Shufersal

chain ,

they responded to Walla!'S request: to date, a kilo of tomatoes has been sold for NIS 5.90, but today (Tuesday) the price rose to NIS 6.90, due to lack of availability due to weather effects and purchase prices that rose significantly for the same reason."

Rami Levy subsidizes: "The price will reach NIS 20 per kilo"

We caught up with Rami Levy, the owner of the food chain "Rami Levy Sycamore Marketing"

, for a short conversation

, who explained the situation to us: "Today the price per kilo of tomato ranges from NIS 4.90 to NIS 6.90. There is a shortage and therefore the price is sky high."

As for the reason for the shortages, Levy replied: "It was cold and therefore difficult to grow, and when there is a shortage of supply it is small and the demand is great and therefore the price has skyrocketed. Today a tomato in the wholesale market is NIS 12 per kilo."

I challenge Levy's latest answer while reading him data from the Plants Council website where it says that the price of a wholesale tomato is NIS 8.50.

Levy is not particularly excited about me and explains: "Leave what is written in the wholesale market, it costs me a tomato, let's say nine shekels until it arrives at the store. Then the state takes another tax shekel, the state is not ashamed to take a tax, and once again distribution costs are the price. "

And as for the future, here too Levy sounds optimistic:

"The price will reach NIS 20 per kilo at the moment, we are subsidizing it."
