Inflation and supply shortages: These goods are scarce – and expensive

2022-04-11T06:40:19.882Z

Germans suffer from enormous price increases for everyday goods. Inflation hits them when filling up as well as in the refrigerated section - and some products are already in short supply. A selection.

When the corona crisis began a good two years ago, hamster buyers attacked Germany's supermarkets.

They stashed toilet paper, yeast, pasta, disinfectants.

It was about getting through a few weeks of quarantine.

Superfluous, many said to themselves.

Back then, the supply bottlenecks were only short-lived.

On the other hand, many fear that the fact that flour or oil is only sold in rations in many supermarkets could have much longer-lasting reasons.

Food Minister Cem Özdemir assures that the supply of food is currently guaranteed.

So far, however, the Green politician's appeals to show solidarity in the store and not to stash too much seem to have had little fruit.

Habeck: War "will cost us prosperity"

This is probably also related to the fact that the rising prices are already becoming a problem for more and more people in Germany and the high energy costs in particular are affecting almost all commodities.

Large chains like Aldi have raised their prices significantly in the past few days, and other companies have announced increases.

In addition to the costs of electricity, gas and fuel, it is also the price of food, among other things, that recently drove inflation in Germany to 7.3 percent - the highest level in 40 years.

The previous relief packages from politics do not outweigh the increases.

This development is fueled by the aftermath of the corona economy - but most recently by Vladimir Putin's war in Ukraine.

The bloody conflict caused energy prices to explode.

According to experts, however, those for industrial products and food also continued to increase, partly because of the rising costs for energy and fertilizer.

An end to the development is not in sight.

The index of the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) was 159.3 points in March, well above the previous year's high value of 119.2.

Cereals and fats in particular are again noticeably more expensive.

In poorer countries, for example, the failure of the Ukraine granary can lead to hunger if wheat becomes scarce or at least expensive.

In Germany, on the other hand, Federal Economics Minister Robert Habeck warns that the war "will cost us prosperity."

And many an innkeeper has already taken fries off the menu because of a lack of oil, words like renunciation are in fashion these days.

Here is a selection of the products where price increases or shortages have already hit significantly:
