Russian Deputy Prime Minister Alexander Novak announced that the transfer of payments for exported Russian gas to the ruble stems from Russia's desire to ensure their receipt.

"The reason for transferring gas payments to the ruble is due to Russia's desire to obtain 100% guarantees of receipt of its money," Novak said in an article published by Energy Policy.

Novak pointed out that many buyers of Russian gas have already agreed to convert payments into the Russian currency and that his country is awaiting a decision on this matter from other importers.

The Russian Deputy Prime Minister ruled out the possibility of Europe replacing energy supplies from other sources and said, "The fate of the industry and the Europeans themselves depends on the rationality of the European Union."

After Western countries imposed sanctions on Russia, which affected part of its international reserves, Moscow announced the transfer of gas payments for unfriendly countries to the ruble in order to ensure receipt of the price of the imported gas.

On the 31st of last March, Russian President Vladimir Putin signed an order defining a new system for paying for Russian gas supplies by buyers from unfriendly countries.
