The French Customs Administration announced today that France recorded a record trade deficit last March, amounting to 11.5 billion euros.
The French newspaper, Le Figaro, quoted the customs administration as saying that "the trade deficit of French goods reached a new record level in the month of March, amounting to 11.5 billion euros" due to the high energy prices that rose due to the crisis in Ukraine and Western sanctions against Russia.
The deficit in France exceeded 10 billion euros in February and reached an absolute record in the accumulation over twelve months at 100 billion euros.
The sharp deterioration in the French trade balance is linked to the increase in the quantities of imported goods compared to exported goods, as import prices rose by 5 percent, while exports rose by 2 percent, in addition to the rise in fuel and electricity prices, whose bill increased by 4 percent during March and 19 percent within three months.
On February 8, the French customs administration indicated that France recorded the worst trade deficit in its history in 2021, amounting to 84.7 billion euros.
