The Russian Ministry of Finance announced its intention to continue fulfilling international financial obligations in rubles, after the US Treasury's decision not to renew Moscow's sovereign debt service license.
"We will continue to repay international bonds in rubles after the US decision not to renew the debt service license," the Russian ministry said in a statement today, RIA Novosti news agency, noting that the US decision primarily undermines the rights of foreign investors and undermines confidence in the Western financial infrastructure.
The decision of the Russian Ministry of Finance came in line with the expectations of experts who indicated that the ministry will continue to service the foreign debt denominated in foreign currency in Russian rubles after the US decision.
The head of the Russian State Duma, Vyacheslav Volodin, had announced earlier that Russia would pay its foreign debts in rubles, stressing that his country had the necessary funds for the payments.
