These days many teens are looking for jobs for the great freedom.

At the same time, there are quite a few employers who open their doors and are happy to absorb the young guys, who in the summer months alleviate, if only slightly, the shortage of workers that exists in some industries.

"Unlike the same period last year, when we were in the corona crisis, the employment market is now with a very low unemployment rate, the whole economy is growing, and there are not enough working hands for the various fields," says

Liat Ben Torah-Shoshan, career director at AllJobs.

"For example, on our website, there is a 38% increase between May 2021 and May 2022 in jobs that are also suitable for teenagers. The number now stands at 560 jobs, and there is also a 31% increase between April and May this year. Also, at the same time, we are already starting to see "The awakening of those teenagers who are looking for work for the summer. We see an increase of 20% in the last two months in the demand for jobs that suit them."

By law, the minimum employment age for youth during the school year is 15 years.

Children who have reached the age of 14 during an official school holiday such as summer vacation can be employed, provided that these are light jobs that are not harmful to their health.

Minimum wage for youth: up to age 16: NIS 21.45 per hour;

Aged 16-17: NIS 22.98 per hour;

At the age of 17-18: NIS 25.43 per hour.

According to Ben Torah-Shoshan, teenagers can get involved in food sales, in shops, malls, in the world of restaurants, in hotels, in training at summer camps, and there are also those - with electric bicycle owners - who are integrated into errand roles.

“Usually, teens are a temporary workforce that the employer knows in advance that recruits them most often for July-August, but it is definitely a help to the stressful summer months,” she says.

Heat July-August

"In the hotel industry, as in other industries, there is still a shortage of workers," says Eran Tobol, human resources manager of the Fattal chain.

"Teens are not the complete alternative to this shortage. We work in various channels to recruit, such as in collaboration with the Ministry of Social Equality for the benefit of integrating veterans into work.

But teens certainly help us in the hot season. For years we recruit dozens of teens from age 16 and up, from graduation to the end of August. We recruit for a wide range of positions according to the needs of the hotels in the different areas, from Eilat to Tiberias. They can work as pool boys, in dining rooms, or in different service positions. This summer is a busy season, we increase the service Ours in hotels, and can absorb them. "

-How are you hired?

"We have a network recruitment center, you can call Fattal's employment center or email. We also initiate collaborations with schools every summer. For example, in Dimona there is a school that teaches cooks that we accompany on a daily basis, and integrate the guys in our summer with regular work. ".

- What is the salary of the youth?

"NIS 30-35 per hour, depending on the position and the region. There is also a package of incentives. For example, in Eilat, those who work two full months will receive another NIS 1,000 in addition to their salary."

Teens will also be welcome on the Kravitz network.

"During the summer, we are recruiting close to 500 youths," says Maor Artzi, Kravitz Group's VP of retail

.

We recruit from the age of 16, for sales representative positions, work at the cash register and the sales floor.

Anyone who is interested can leave details on our website or just go to one of the branches closest to the place of residence and take an interest. "

Before the guys start working in the branches, Artzi says, "We give them training in Zoom groups, where we pass on the professional information, including what an orthopedic bag is, how to adjust equipment according to age, how to approach the customer, how to make a proper sales call, how "We approach children who are our main audience in the summer. It is important for us to give them the tools and relevant knowledge. The youth take this training very seriously."

- What is the reward?

"We pay what is required by law. It ends up being much more than the minimum wage thanks to the sales rewards, contests and choppers they receive. We open a WhatsApp group, encourage them to sales, advertise who sold more, encourage productive and shared action."

The work is in July-August, but according to Artzi, "quite a few teenagers choose to work shifts even after the summer in shifts they can give after school hours. Also, 60% of those who work with us in the summer, come back to us the following summer and everyone kicks off."

Test in cleanliness

"In the summer, we receive about 800-1,000 people in about 60 of our branches around the country, of which 70% are teenagers," says Raya Abramovich, VP of the Burgranch chain.

"This is in addition to the existing employees in the chain.

This is reinforcement for the months of July-August, which make up most of the work.

We are waiting for these two months all year.

We recruit teens for a variety of roles, such as kitchen workers, cashiers, lobbies, couriers and even shift managers.

The wage is the minimum wage according to the law.

Those who are in charge of a shift, for example, receive 3-4 shekels more per hour. "

- High response?

" There are many who want to, not everyone is accepted in the end.

Do them a brief tutorial and interview, then three tests on cleanliness, safety and protection, and food safety.

Anyone who is interested can come through the website or go directly to the branch and take an interest. "

According to Abramovich, the youth reinforcement is very helpful, "but the problem is that they come in July-August, only some continue with us during the year, and then on September 1 there are no workers. . .

The Octopus fashion chain employs about 200 teenagers throughout the year, while in the summer months the number of employees increases by about 50.

Among the jobs offered: sales work, unloading of goods, arranging the branch, cash register work.

Job requirements are goodwill, motivation and responsibility.

For the summer months, the chain publishes job ads in the branches themselves, on the company's website and on social media.

"We employ teenagers throughout the year, when the numbers increase during the summer months. We believe in them and are happy to give them the opportunity to join the work force," says Eli Plus, director of the Octopus Network.

"Quite a few of the company's employees today started working for us as teenagers. We recognized their potential, provided them with training and tools to grow and develop with the network, and today they are in various management positions, some even sending the next generation to work in the chain's branches. "Man, especially in the central region, and the Corona period only exacerbated the situation. We believe that youth can help the industry cope with the shortage of manpower, and that goodwill and genuine motivation can make up for a lack of experience."

Make a living on their own

The "Stock" chain is also preparing for the busy summer days and recruiting young people to reinforce the workers in stores around the country.

"The summer period and before returning to school requires special preparation from us," says Ofer Barak, the chain's CEO.

"Many employees go on vacation, and the workload requires us to prepare properly.

As every year we are preparing to recruit between 150-200 teenagers aged 17-18 for the positions of shop assistants and freezers, when in August the number reaches the top end.

We pay them according to the law and those who excel also receive financial bonuses from us. "

At the beginning of August, Barak says, the "Back to School" festival begins on the Stoke network, and the youth who work for them are of great importance.

"They know the products, know what their friends prefer and are the best salespeople for their peers," he says.

"In addition, we see great importance in employing young people, especially during the long summer vacation. As part of the work in the branches, they learn to take responsibility and earn a living in their own right, which strengthens their ability, independence and self-worth. "And their diligence from the other workers. We have great youth and we are happy to give him an employment framework."

Adam Barkat, CEO of Sahbak - Job Website for Young People (Photo: PR)

"These days there is a 40% increase in job seekers aged 16-17, compared to what was in the same period last year, and also compared to the previous months in the current year. The jobs for young people.

As of this writing, there are 425 jobs on the site suitable for 16-plus-year-olds. Barkat defines the site as a kind of Instagram for the employment market.

"The world of jobs is a bit gray, And notes that before the corona into the field of catering and fashion, for example, it was easier to recruit. ”During the corona period recruitments became more difficult.

Whereas now, for example, there is a 30% increase in the number of teenagers looking for work in the field of fashion.

A lot of teens are applying for these positions these summer, and employers in these industries have more candidates.

By the way, recruiters usually would not like to recruit teenagers in most areas, because until you train someone, he goes back to school.

But it seems to me that now some employers who have difficulty recruiting, will no longer have a choice.

For example, at least two of the largest fashion brands in the country, which in the past during this period were not recruiting teenagers, have already come out with campaigns to touch this audience.

There are also fashion companies that have now raised wages by NIS 3 per hour, and we have even seen more, in order to succeed in recruiting, and not just teenagers but young people in general. "
