Dar es Salaam-SANA
The Tanzanian government has signed an agreement with British Shell and Norway's Equinor to build a $30 billion liquefied natural gas (LNG) plant.
"We have never reached this stage of natural gas development in the history of our country and we are happy that this project will change our economy dramatically," Tanzanian Energy Minister Januyari Makamba was quoted by AFP as saying during a meeting marking the signing ceremony of the agreement yesterday.
Makamba added that "Tanzania's geographical location facilitates the transfer of natural gas to other countries, especially in Asia, looking for new sources of energy."
This initial agreement paves the way for new discussions aimed at making a final investment decision in 2025 and the start of the expected activity of the plant by 2029-2030 in the coastal city of Lindi in the south of the country.
