The World Trade Organization has warned of the difficulty of concluding new international trade agreements due to the repercussions of the Corona pandemic, the Ukrainian crisis, and major food and energy crises.
Reuters news agency quoted WTO Director-General Ngozi Okonjo-Iwela as saying in a press conference that the world has changed since the last ministerial conference of the World Trade Organization nearly five years ago, indicating that concluding a trade agreement has become more complex and difficult, and that the road will be bumpy.
Iwella called on trade ministers to show the world that the WTO can take appropriate action and finalize agreements on issues such as the provision of coronavirus vaccines, food security, and setting the path for WTO reform, noting that compromise is not ideal at all.
The 164 member states of the World Trade Organization make decisions by consensus, meaning that one country can block progress and negotiations often take place over years.
