If the level of rent in the center makes you think about moving to the periphery, you should think again, especially if you are women.

Data emerging from a study by the Knesset Research and Information Center determine that women in the periphery earn less.

The study, written by Dr. Michal Lerer and Dr. Nelly Kfir, deals with gaps in the employment of women in the center versus the periphery and paints an unequivocal picture that women in the periphery earn significantly less than women in the central region.

The study found that as peripheral subdivisions move toward more central subdivisions, average monthly wages rise almost consistently, both for employees and for tenants.

For example, in 2019, the average monthly salary of women renters in the Golan sub-district was NIS 6,748, while the average monthly salary of renters in the Tel Aviv sub-district was NIS 10,728.

In relation to the number of full-time positions in all sub-districts, it was found that the proportion of men who work full-time usually exceeds the proportion of full-time working women and is approximately 90% -80% among men and about 60% -70% among women.

However the study authors note that it seems that in the peripheral sub-districts the proportion of women working part-time is slightly larger compared to the central sub-districts, meaning that in the main sub-districts there are more women who work full-time.

Travel to work less than men

And what about work mobility?

In all sub-districts, peripheral and central, the proportion of employed persons working within their sub-district is higher than the proportion of male employed persons working within their sub-district.

Accordingly, in most cases a higher proportion of men are employed outside the sub-district within or outside the district.

Hence men travel more than women to the workplace.

Another figure that emerges from the study is that women make up only 42% of the total self-employed in Israel, and that one of the reasons for the gaps in employment rates between men and women concerns the challenge of combining family life and work, a challenge that still affects women more than men.

This challenge is gaining momentum in peripheral areas.

The study authors note that there are significant gaps between women's employment rates and men's employment rates in the Arab population.

For example, in the Acre sub-district, the employment rates of men and women in the Jewish population are 71.6% and 61.5%, respectively, and the employment rates of men and women in the Arab population are 64.4% and 38.1%, respectively.

In the Haifa sub-district, the employment rates of men and women in the Jewish population are 63.7% and 57.6%, respectively, and the employment rates of men and women in the Arab population are 65.5% and 44.8%, respectively.

"Promote full equality of opportunity"

MK Limor Magen Telem (Yisrael Beiteinu), whose research was conducted at her request, told Walla: "It is important to put a spotlight on the wage gaps between men and women and between the center and the periphery.

I set myself the goal of promoting women in the periphery, so it is interesting to find out that throughout the country there are more independent women than independent women, and there are almost no independent women in Arab society.

The study allows us legislators to rely on as real and up-to-date data as possible.

A comparison we made between the 2018 study and the latest study shows that there is a reduction in gaps between men and women in employment and wage rates, but the gaps are still high between the center and the periphery.

It can be assumed that the reason is that the corona hit the periphery more than the center.

It is our goal as legislators to combat these phenomena and to promote full equality of opportunity between all parts of society. "
