Due to staffing problems, the airline Eurowings has once again canceled numerous connections at the two largest airports in North Rhine-Westphalia.

As can be seen from the website of Düsseldorf Airport, ten departures were canceled on Tuesday and thus about every ninth Eurowings start at the location.

Among other things, flights to Berlin, Budapest, Vienna and Nice were affected.

The airline also pulled out the red pencil at Cologne/Bonn Airport and canceled some connections, including flights to Zurich, Munich and Zagreb.

Travelers can expect further cancellations in the coming days.

One reason for the cancellations is a high level of sick leave among the airline's workforce.

A Eurowings spokeswoman said that the increase in corona infections was not spared.

“The surprising cancellations exceeded our reserves for a short time, which is why we were unfortunately unable to operate some flights.” Eurowings regrets the inconvenience and is trying to “offer all affected passengers an alternative solution as quickly as possible and to make a compensation payment if the conditions are met”.

Eurowings so far an isolated case

After the end of the corona restrictions, the aviation industry is going through a difficult phase.

On the one hand, there is a lack of staff for the security checks, which leads to long waiting times and resentment among travelers.

In addition, many industry employees looked for other jobs during the pandemic so that they no longer had to be on short-time work.

The Eurowings spokeswoman spoke of “industrial challenges”.

The entire aviation industry has lost 150,000 employees across Europe since Corona.

»Although personnel are being recruited everywhere at record speed, sudden traffic peaks cannot yet be fully covered.«

The situation is also tense for other airlines.

According to the Düsseldorf Airport website, there was no other airline canceling departures at the location on Tuesday.
