Russian Finance Minister Anton Siluanov announced today that the ruble payment is the only way to repay foreign investors within the framework of international “Eurobonds” bonds, after restrictions and sanctions imposed by Western countries against Moscow.
Siluanov explained, in a statement carried by Russia Today website, the reason for the ministry's failure to pay the international bond payments in reserve currencies such as the euro, the pound sterling or the Swiss franc, noting that the body responsible for repaying the bonds "the National Settlement Deposit" was included in the sanctions list by the European Union for that. It can no longer make settlements in euros, pointing out that countries such as Britain and Switzerland have imposed a ban on settlements of Russian state debt.
Earlier today, the Russian Finance Ministry made ruble payments for two Eurobonds for the years 2027 and 2047, totaling 12.51 billion rubles.
