After the bankruptcy of the MV shipyards in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, a solution for the location in Rostock is now becoming more concrete: the federal government has submitted a purchase offer for the site.
According to the German Press Agency, the Federal Agency for Real Estate Tasks (Bima) and the Federal Office for Equipment, Information Technology and Use of the Bundeswehr were involved in the offer.
The Navy plans to expand its warship maintenance and repair capacity at the site.
Insolvency administrator Christoph Morgen explained that the offer period ends today.
The offers received by then would be examined and then discussed with the creditors' committee.
The navy wants to use the site in Rostock, where the naval command is also located, as a branch of its main arsenal in Wilhelmshaven.
According to information from those close to the insolvency administrator, around 500 jobs could be secured on the 65-hectare site of the former MV shipyards.
The shipyard group with around 2000 employees at the three locations Wismar, Rostock and Stralsund filed for bankruptcy at the beginning of January.
A solution has already been found for the MV site in Wismar through the entry of Thyssen-Krupp Marine Systems (TKMS) for military shipbuilding.
TKMS wants to build submarines there from 2024 and secure between 800 and 1,500 jobs, depending on the size of the orders.
