Solar energy on the balcony: How useful are the small solar power plants?

If you don't have a roof, you can install a solar system on the balcony. But does the small panel really save costs – and does it provide green electricity?

Robert Habeck, Federal Minister of Economics

»Nobody should be cold, but that private households also play their part, and that a permanent or long-term interruption of industrial production also has massive consequences for the economy as a whole, for the people in the country, for the supply situation, that is now also the case recognized.«

Saving energy is the order of the day and there is great concern that Putin will finally turn off the gas supply.

Again and again the focus is on private solar systems.

If you have larger areas such as a house roof, you can save costs in the long term, produce green electricity and consume less electricity from the grid.

But what if there is no roof, just the balcony?

Corinna Stroll and David Schindler want to test this and install a solar panel on their Munich balcony that feeds its electricity directly into the socket.

But there is a catch.

David Schindler, energy saver from Munich

"I probably won't really save money or electricity with my system now, in the sense that the alignment isn't that optimal."

Because it's not that easy to save a lot of money with the system on the balcony.

If the panel is not at the optimal angle to the sun, it produces less electricity.

Whether the 400-600 Euro acquisition costs are really profitable cannot be said in general terms and should be thought through before the purchase.

David Schindler, energy saver from Munich

»But of course you produce green electricity and need less from the grid.

And in return there is more green electricity available in the grid for others.«

If the system runs optimally, however, a lot can be saved.

Lukas Hoffmeier, solar system manufacturer "Priwatt"

"A balcony power plant primarily supplies base load consumers, these are devices such as the refrigerator, the freezer, but also a router or the television or lighting.

And this plug-in solar system would in turn cover about 10 to 15% of the base load or the total consumption in the household.«

It is therefore necessary to check in each individual case whether such a mini photovoltaic system makes sense.

By the way: Every system has to be registered in Germany - but with an output of up to 600 watts, a simplified procedure applies
