The Chinese Ministry of Commerce announced today the suspension of natural sand exports to the Taiwan region, starting today.
"The move is in line with the relevant laws and regulations of the Chinese mainland," a ministry spokesman was quoted by Xinhua as saying.
The Chinese General Administration of Customs also announced the suspension of imports of citrus and two types of fish products from Taiwan, in line with regulatory laws and keeping relevant companies informed.
The administration noted that since last year, the Chinese mainland's customs authorities have several times detected small streptococcus as well as large residues of fenthion and dimethoate in citrus fruits imported from Taiwan, indicating that decisions were made to prevent risks.
Many agencies and media reported that China's restrictive economic measures came against the backdrop of US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi's visit to Taiwan.
