Six international Ryanair flights departing from or bound for Spain were canceled on Monday morning, the first day of a new strike by cabin crew at the Irish low-cost carrier, one of the unions behind the strike announced. movement.

This strike is in addition to those engaged in other low-cost companies, in particular the British Easyjet, since the beginning of the summer in Spain, in the middle of the tourist season and while activity is restarting after the Covid-19 pandemic. .

Four of the six Ryanair flights canceled at 9:00 a.m. this morning were to leave or land in Barcelona, ​​the other two departing from or arriving at Palma de Mallorca airport in the Balearic archipelago, according to the Union Syndicale Ouvrier (USO). ), which organized this strike with the Independent Union of Air Crew (SITCPLA).

This strike at Ryanair, which offers more than 650 connections with Spain, has so far had a limited impact, mainly resulting in delays.

As of Monday morning, the delayed flights, all domestic, numbered 28.

third round of strikes

The employees in Spain of the Irish company launched on August 8 their third round of strikes since the beginning of the summer, much more extensive this time, since it must continue until January 7, 2023, due four days a week (Monday to Thursday).

The strikers are demanding in particular an improvement in their working conditions and the signing of a collective agreement.

According to the unions, Ryanair is the only international company not to have a collective agreement in Spain.

Ryanair recently reached an agreement with the CCOO (Workers' Commissions) union, a minority among the flight crew, but this agreement was rejected by the USO and the SITCPLA, which consider it insufficient and are also calling for the reinstatement of 11 striking employees dismissed last month.

Alongside this strike at Ryanair, the pilots of Easyjet, another low-cost airline, have been observing weekly three-day strikes since August 12 at the airports of Barcelona, ​​Málaga (south) and the islands of Palma. from Mallorca and Menorca.

The next one is scheduled for Saturday August 27 to Monday August 29.

In addition, the cabin crew of Iberia Express - a low-cost subsidiary of the Spanish company Iberia - will be on strike from August 28 to September 6 at the call of the USO union.
