Drone Photo Awards 2022: The best photos from a drone perspective

Viewed from the air, the world still holds many undiscovered beauties. More than 2,600 photographers submitted their pictures to the international »Drone Photo Awards«. Here are the best.

Berth: In Sadarghat Port in Dhaka, Bangladesh, a man stretched out on his boat to rest for a few hours.

From a bird's-eye view, it looks like the man is sleeping in a fish's belly while the other fish watch curiously.

Photographer Anindita Roy succeeded in taking the picture;

she is the winner in the »People« category at the »Drone Photo Awards 2022 «, an offshoot of the Siena Awards.

More than 2,600 photographers from 116 countries took part in the international competition.

Above roofs: In the past, workers and their families lived in Copenhagen's Kartoffelrækkerne – in the rows of potatoes.

Today the 480 houses built between 1873 and 1889 are in the district of Østerbrogade

popular addresses.

Photographer Serhiy Vovk soared his camera drone over the eleven small streets and won the »Urban« category with this shot.

Like a sphinx's paw: Swiss photographer David Rouge followed the Namib desert to where the dunes on the southwest coast of Africa meet the Atlantic.

His drone photo is the winning image in the »Nature« category.

Spared: The small piece of road that the lava flow of the Cumbre Vieja on La Palma has not buried acts like an island in a black ocean.

The devastating volcanic eruption on the Canary Island at the end of 2021 lasted three months.

The bottom line: the lava flow destroyed 3,000 buildings and made 2,000 people homeless, burying banana plantations – and many kilometers of roads.

Italian photographer Enrico Pescantini took this picture on location, coming second in the Nature category.

Make way: Shortly after a sandstorm, photographer Yura Borschev piloted his camera drone over the basketball court in Dubai.

The jury decided: worthy of an award – and rewarded the work with second place in the »Urban« category.

Photographer Sergey Anufriev had more room for turning maneuvers with his camera drone and earned a particularly commendable jury mention in the »People« category.

Desert snake: With up to 220 wagons, the iron ore trains in Mauritania are among the longest trains in the world.

From deep in the Sahara, from the mining town of Zouérat, it brings its cargo more than 700 kilometers to the coastal town of Nouadhibou on the Atlantic.

The locals call the train »Le train« – it is the only rail connection in one of the poorest countries in the world.

Shepherds, traders and other passengers can travel on the wagons free of charge.

The journey can take well over 20 hours.

Photographer Justin Jin has his camera drone soared over the route.

Rating of the jury in the »Urban« category: »particularly commendable«.

Scheduled flight: Larry Gunn in the US state of New Mexico succeeded in this aerial view of the spectacular Shiprock.

Also known as "Winged Rock" in Navajo, the formation is the remains of an eroded volcanic vent.

The jury found the photo in the »Nature« competition category »particularly commendable«.

Garden Goals: In a park by Taiping Lake in southwest China's Yunnan Province, Jingkun Yang captured a picture of Princess Taiping, born in the 7th century, via camera drone.

The inclusion of the landscape work of art convinced the jury in the »Urban« category.

She got an honorable mention.

Water cannon: Thet Naing Yu captured this scene during the water festival at Inle Lake in Myanmar - and received a Special Mention in the »People« category.

A visit to Inle Lake with its floating market used to be a must for many Southeast Asia backpackers and cultural travelers.

Since the military coup last year, tourism in the country has almost come to a standstill.
