Damascus-SANA

In the context of seeking to benefit from agricultural and organic waste in the production of alternative energy by fermenting it using a bio-digester, agricultural engineer Lucy Zughaib worked on inventing an automated solar collector aimed at raising the efficiency of the digester and increasing its productivity throughout the year.

Zughaib explained to SANA reporter that after researching and investigating the effect of temperature (ambient air temperature) on the performance of the anaerobic fermentation process for tree waste, she worked on making an automated solar collector that controls the required temperature within a specific algorithm whose area is proportional to the size of the existing fermenter at the lowest possible cost.

Engineer Zoughaib indicated that the collector is made of wood coated with a moisture-proof layer with a black-coated adsorption element and a glass cover that raises biogas productivity throughout the year with an efficiency of 500 percent in winter and 30 percent in summer by heating the digester to stimulate and speed up gas production, noting that it can be manufactured Locally, there is nothing similar to it in imports.

Zughaib pointed out the importance of taking advantage of solar energy to raise the low temperatures in winter to a temperature suitable for the activity of digestive bacteria. A flat solar heater with an area of 0.8 square meters was designed to heat a 60-liter bio-digester to reach a temperature of 50 degrees Celsius, which speeds up the fermentation process to obtain gas. Bio-waste either from agricultural waste or organic waste.

It is noteworthy that the project participated in the Agriculture Pioneers competition held by the National Union of Syrian Students and the Syrian Association of Young Entrepreneurs (SIA) in 2021 and was among the first 13 projects out of 480 and was among the youth entrepreneurial projects within the activities of the first entrepreneurial investment forum (Opportunity 2022) at the University of Damascus and within The first 12 projects in the “Pioneers of Digital Transformation and Renewable Energies” competition in 2022.
