Isabelle Lonvis-Rome: “80% of French people are in favor of including the right to abortion in the Constitution”

2022-09-29T09:11:51.736Z

The Minister Delegate for Gender Equality, Diversity and Equal Opportunities answered our questions, on the sidelines of a speech at Family Planning. She recalls the threat hanging over the right to abortion and her hope to see it enshrined in the Constitution.

International explosion after the abrogation by the Supreme Court of the United States of the Roe vs. Wade judgment last June, the right to abortion prohibited or very strongly restricted in Europe (Poland, Andorra, Malta, Monaco), Hungarian amendment voted last September 12 obliging women wishing to have an abortion to listen to the heartbeat of the fetus, the right to abortion has been greatly disrupted in the world in recent months.

In this context, and in favor of Wednesday, September 28, the International Day of the right to abortion, the Minister Delegate for Equality between Women and Men Isabelle Lonvis-Rome wanted, within an audience of activists, to reaffirm its full and entire support for this right won in France 47 years ago... and which nevertheless remains fragile.

Admittedly, last March the deadlines for recourse to abortion were lengthened from 12 to 14 weeks, free contraception – already in force for minors – was extended to all women up to 25 years of age.

In 2023, the morning after pill will be accessible free of charge for all women, without a prescription or age limit.

The fact remains that inscribing the right to abortion in the Constitution in France remains,

for Minister Isabelle Lonvis-Rome as for Élisabeth Borne and President Macron, another objective to achieve.

Maintenance.

In view of an international context generally unfavorable to abortion, are you particularly concerned?

What is worrying is this rise of conservatism all over the world, right on our doorstep with, recently, the coming to power of the extreme right in Italy.

We can see it: wherever conservative regimes seize power, women's rights, and in the first place, that of abortion, are systematically called into question, although reproductive and sexual rights are part of the fundamental rights that are harshly acquired.

They first attack abortion, because they do not support the freedom of women that the legalization of abortion has allowed.

In France, can we say that the right to abortion is finally a given?

France, country of the Enlightenment, is also the country of women's rights.

To commit to abortion is to show the courage of this fundamental right.

The women of our country and the associations play an important watchdog role to ensure that there is no setback and to always advance equality.

But France is not immune to the rise of conservatism;

the last legislative elections demonstrate this to us.

Marine Le Pen has never been an ally for women's rights.

Each time, she voted against the provisions in their favour, whether at national or European level.

This suggests that the National Rally (RN) will not be the ally of the right to abortion.

If the number of abortions remains stable, it decreases among young people.

Is it thanks to the advances of recent years?

Indeed, the number of abortions among young people has decreased, which shows that the measures taken in favor of better contraceptive coverage are having real effects.

This is why we have reinforced these measures by introducing free contraceptive pills for those under 25 and free morning-after pills for all women regardless of age and without a prescription (

Planning Familial creates a new site to fight fake news

The new site of the Family planning on abortion: ivg-contraception-sexualites.org.

With this platform, the association wants to strengthen its presence on the web, fight against misinformation and guilt still conveyed on social networks or on sites that are sometimes very well referenced.

This new place of exchange intends to become "the reference for people seeking reliable information about abortion, on a benevolent site that respects their choice, whatever it may be", says Sarah Durocher, vice-president of Family Planning .

The site is designed to be simple and intuitive, and to answer questions that often come up among users.

“Am I going to hurt?

» ;

“If I am a minor, should I tell my parents?

" etc.

To adapt to new modes of communication, especially among young people, Planning Familial will also launch a chat, in the first half of 2023, where it will be possible to ask written questions, anonymously and free of charge, and to receive answers instantly. .

These new devices come in support of the national number "IVG, contraception, sexualities", the 0800 08 11 11, created seven years ago.

Abolition of the conscience clause of doctors requested by feminist associations or inclusion in the Constitution of the right to abortion, there are however still worksites...

The national ethics committee positioned itself last December against the deletion of this clause, considering that abortion remained a “singular medical act”.

Parliament aligned itself with this opinion.

What matters to me is that every woman can have quick access to a doctor and that she can be taken care of properly.

With François Braun, Minister of Health and Prevention, we ensure this.

Regarding the constitutionalization of the right to abortion, we know that 80% of French people are in favor of it (1).

I hope that parliamentarians will be able to find themselves widely on this subject (the Nupes as well as the majority have put forward two proposals for the inclusion of the right to abortion in the Constitution.

What is your number one priority right now?

We may make every effort possible, in terms of repression, sanction, protection and support, violence against women will not decrease if we do not act upstream.

From childhood and adolescence, young people must be made aware of the issues of equality, in all areas: the fight against harassment, respect for consent, etc.

With Pap Ndiaye, the Minister of National Education, we are working in particular for better access to sexuality education for young people through the application of the 2001 law in schools.

(1) 81% is the share of French people who say they are in favor of including the right to abortion in the French Constitution, according to an Ifop study for the Jean Jaurès Foundation, published in July 2022. Among them, 48% even say they are “very favorable” to this registration.
