"Now, unfortunately, the best trees are gone," says Jörg Bober and adds: "It's really nice from here." Bober is a forest owner in Brandenburg, he leads through the rest of his forest.
Since the start of the Ukraine war, the demand for wood has once again increased rapidly.
So much so that thieves see a deal and are chopping down trees illegally.
A hundred trees, Bober estimates, were stolen from him.
Bertram Breuer, a firewood supplier from Berlin, calls the current situation »an exceptional situation«: he receives almost 200 calls a day with an urgent request for firewood.
The fear of skyrocketing gas prices or even a complete gas ban is fueling the firewood business.
"We want to avoid sitting in the cold with the children," says one of Breuer's customers.
