The French customs administration announced today that it recorded a record trade deficit in France last August, amounting to 15.5 billion euros.
The French newspaper Le Figaro quoted the customs administration as saying: The increase in the deficit came mainly as a result of the rise in the energy bill among imports, adding: The trade balance deteriorated by one billion euros compared to July, when the deficit amounted to 14.5 billion euros.
The customs indicated that French imports saw an increase in their cost by 1.1 billion euros to reach 65.6 billion euros, while exports increased only slightly by 100 million euros to 50.1 billion euros.
Customs pointed out that the energy bill cost an additional 800 million euros in August, as electricity and gas imports continue to rise for France, while energy exports are flat.
The French customs administration had announced earlier that France recorded a record trade deficit last March of 11.5 billion euros.
