Russian President Vladimir Putin stressed that the shift to paying national currencies among the CIS members enhances sovereignty and deepens their integration, noting that this is not related to the current political situation.
During an informal meeting of the heads of the association today, Putin said: tragic events are taking place in Ukraine, and there are conflicts between other countries of the association, which requires the development of measures to solve them.
Putin added: The CIS summit in Kazakhstan will focus on the sustainability of economies, and the integration of member states into politics, economy and other fields, in addition to security issues, will be discussed.
Putin supported the proposal of Kazakh President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev to create an international organization of the Commonwealth of Independent States to promote the Russian language.
Putin had announced his participation in Astana in the first summit of its kind between Russia and Central Asian countries.
