Europe launches Iris2, its sovereign connectivity constellation

Europe will equip itself, like the United States and China, with a constellation of sovereign connectivity, Iris2.

A project that European Commissioner Thierry Breton, notably in charge of space, presented nine months ago.

The regulation on this crucial infrastructure for Europe's digital security was adopted on Thursday at a tripartite meeting between the European Commission, the Council (the Member States) and the European Parliament.

This gives a legal framework and kicks off the program.

It's a big step for our resilience and a giant leap for our technological sovereignty

An agreement was reached on three subjects: the budget, the contribution of 30% of start-ups to the program and the possibility of using micro- or mini-launchers - strong demand from Germany -, in the event of unavailability. European rockets or for missions not suitable for large launchers.
