EU Commission sees opportunities for compromise in the trade dispute with the USA
The EU Commission sees opportunities to still be able to avert the looming trade war with the USA over the so-called Inflation Reduction Act.
"Our goal is to give European companies the same access to the US market as companies from Mexico or Canada have," Commission Vice President Valdis Dombrovskis told SPIEGEL.
To this end, the Brussels authority will hold talks with both the Washington administration and the US Congress.
"If the US moves, a compromise is conceivable," says the EU Trade Commissioner.
Dombrovskis rejected French President Emmanuel Macron's push for a Buy European regulation.
"Now is not the time to rattle sabers," he said.
"We want a negotiated solution."
The trade politician also rejected the demand to counter the US law with additional green investments in Europe.
»A subsidy race is expensive and inefficient«.
In addition, there has long been “extensive climate aid in Europe”.
The deputy commissioner sharply criticized the actions of the US administration.
"Europe is a strategic ally of the US," he said.
"That's why we expect to be treated that way."
