For a long time, Messi and Ronaldo alternately led the Forbes ranking of the richest football players in the world. This year, 23-year-old Mbappé has come out on top. A former Dortmund star opened up.

Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi have been among the highest paid soccer players in the world for years.

But the superstars have competition.

The current "Forbes" ranking reveals what has long been suspected:

Kylian Mbappé clearly outperforms the two superstars given his recent contract.

The Frenchman, who was actually willing to change, only extended his contract with Paris Saint-Germain in May.

Even French Prime Minister Emmanuel Macron intervened during the contract negotiations and insisted on staying in Paris.

In the end, the new contract in Paris should pay off extremely lucratively for Mbappé.

It has not been confirmed whether there is any truth to the rumored sum of over 600 million euros for three years.

Mbappé's club denied.

Forbes, on the other hand, estimates that the French superstar will earn $128 million before taxes and agent fees in the 2022-23 season.

Meanwhile, the two long-time leaders Messi and Ronaldo, who have mutually topped the rankings since 2014, have to be content with second and third place.

That should probably not move her much, because her salary is still around $ 100 million.

Ronaldo, who lost his contract with Manchester United just for the World Cup, is also the player who can generate the most money off the field this season: a whopping $60 million.

Overall, according to Forbes, the ten highest-paid soccer players in the 2022-23 season raked in record earnings of $652 million before taxes.

This corresponds to an increase of eleven percent, reports the financial newspaper.

Last year, the top ten made $585 million.

The sums are gigantic and have often been criticized as excessive.

But the rise seems unstoppable.

Even during the coronavirus pandemic, the total for the top ten has not fallen despite some austerity measures, although some of the top earners like Messi and Ronaldo have lost millions of dollars.

Most of the total this year again focuses on the top three players: Mbappé, Messi and Ronaldo.

With the exception of Neymar Jr., the sums of the following players, such as Mohamed Salah, Robert Lewandowski or Kevin De Bruyne, are significantly lower.

The former BVB star Erling Haaland is new in the ranking of the top ten best-earning football players – but the gap to Mbappé, who is only one year older, is considerable.
