The president of the National Center for University and School Works (Cnous), which notably manages university restaurants throughout France, announced this Sunday, in an interview with Ouest-France, that attendance in these restaurants has reached an “unheard of” level, while inflation aggravates student precariousness.

“We have reached an attendance rate never seen in the history of the Crous, explains Dominique Marchand to Ouest-France.

Between last year and this start of the school year, for the first two months, there has been a 17% increase in activity.

This represents 1.5 million additional meals.

The meal is at 3.30 euros, in addition to a meal accessible at 1 euro for the most precarious (whose number of beneficiaries has been multiplied by three).

Scholarship holders and non-scholarship holders

This increase in attendance is not without consequences: “That explains the long queues at the entrance to university restaurants,” she explains.

"The number of scholarship holders who eat at our sites has increased by 15%", also specifies the president of the Cnous.

“But above all, there is a sharp increase in the attendance of non-scholarship students.

Student precariousness has increased in recent years with the Covid-19 crisis and the increase in rents, especially in large cities where it is no longer rare to see long queues of young people waiting to pick up packages. food.

According to a study by the COP1-Solidarités Étudiants association, 56% of students questioned admitted that they did not eat enough in general.
