He was considered a key figure in the biggest tax scandal in the Federal Republic: the district court in Bonn sentenced the lawyer Hanno Berger to eight years in prison.
The court ruled that the 72-year-old was guilty of tax evasion.
The lawyer is considered the architect of the cum-ex deals, in which shares with (»cum«) and without (»ex«) dividend rights were pushed back and forth around the dividend record date.
Taxes were refunded that had not been paid at all.
As a result, the German tax authorities and thus the general public were cheated by a two-digit billion amount over the years.
