2022-12-27T09:09:07.708Z

What is the wage gap between men and women? Why hightkists strive more for relocation? Which field is desperate for workers and what will happen to the faltering high-tech demand?

work from home or workplace?

A question that concerns both the employed and the employers... (Photo: Unsplash)

AllJobs summarizes 2022: on the one hand: a record in the number of employed, on the other hand: a record in the number of open jobs.

High-tech, which has been the engine of the economy for the past two years, has been slowed down.

There is also a large shortage of workers in all fields, but especially in the field of teaching.

It also turns out that the political and security situation caused a sharp increase in the desire to relocate

. The research department of AllJobs, the largest job site in Israel, summarizes the trends of the past year: the large number of resignations, the hybrid work, the departure for independence - and the gaps in the economy.

The company also provides a forecast for the year 2023.

The data from the group's research department shows that the year 2022 will be remembered as a very good year in the Israeli economy, even though it was full of contrasts: with high growth in all sectors of the economy, a full return to work after two years of the Corona crisis, an excess of tax collection budgets, and very low unemployment.

Alongside all of this, a record number of open jobs in the economy, with difficulties in many industries in hiring employees, high wage increases and a crisis in high-tech that leads to thousands of layoffs in the second half of the year, some of whom find jobs immediately and some enter into a longer job search process.

A record number of employed people, constant search and follow-up of the advertised jobs

In the employment map in Israel, the company sees that in 2022 a record was recorded in the amount of employed which was 83% and marks an increase of 5% compared to 2021 and a jump of 26% compared to 2019 (before the corona virus).

This figure is consistent with the low unemployment rate.

On top of that, the exploration trend of 2021 is still very noticeable and people are looking to improve their employment situation - 66% looked for a job in the last year compared to 60% or less in the pre-corona years.

At the same time, the employees continue to be picky and are not ready to accept every job, but they definitely have their hand on the pulse.

47% actually changed jobs this year (compared to 35% in 2021).

The trend is even more pronounced among workers in the high-tech industry and among young people aged 21-25.

Labor turnover has increased and the main reasons for looking for a job in 2022: salary and conditions as the main reason for changing jobs among 43% of employees, an increase of 25% compared to 2021.

Other reasons, in descending order of importance: the desire to advance professionally and the work environment (17%) and hybrid work (11%) which is the same as last year.

A lesser reason was feeling exhausted (10%).

High growth alongside low unemployment and a 20% increase in the number of new jobs

In terms of business, Alljobs has seen horizontal growth in almost all branches of the economy in the past year.

Businesses are back to normal and the economy has started to recover from two years of Corona, with a 20% increase in the volume of new jobs that are posted and a record of over 45 thousand jobs on the site during the last quarter.

In checking with the employers in Israel, the company sees that most businesses are optimistic towards 2023 in regards to hiring;

Only 5% believe they will stop hiring and lay off workers, 21% think they will slow down the pace of hiring, 56% of the businesses believe there will be no change at all in the scope of growth and 18% are optimistic and expect that there will be an increase and will hire more in the coming year.

Among the fields that showed the most significant increase compared to 2021, are:

procurement and logistics +52%, tourism and hotels +51%, finance and economics +45%, construction and infrastructure +40%, law +38%, administration +37%, service Customers 34%+, senior executives 30%+, biotechnology 26%+.

The 10 fields with the largest volume of jobs for the past year:

Jobs without experience: 77,265, administration: 60,775, customer service: 59,790, finance and economy: 59,300, sales: 48,100, software: 38,725, production and industry: 38,715, teaching, education and training: 24,295, Warehouses: 23,530 and construction and infrastructure building: 23,020.

This is a statistic of the number of jobs published during the year for these fields.

The head of the eye on the map

: The increase recorded was not only in positions - the various cities in Israel also experienced growth, including one particularly surprising one, Rosh Ha'Ain - with the most significant increase in the number of positions.

The demand for workers is also reflected in the division into the main cities in Israel.

Compared to 2022, Rosh Ha'Ain is the city with the highest jump in the number of jobs, an increase of 68% and a volume of 29,090 jobs.

Tel Aviv is at the top with 148 thousand jobs and an increase of 20%, Petah Tikva with 82,945 and an increase of 38%, Ramat Gan with 70,770 and an increase of 41%, Holon is also surprising and marks an increase of 54% and about 49 thousand new jobs.

Hi-tech - the locomotive of the economy in the last two years is undergoing a shake-up

The year 2022 comes after a very strong year in Israeli high-tech, in which the volume of investments in Israeli startups skyrocketed and many companies boasted the coveted title - Unicorn.

The economic changes in the world during the second half of 2022 affect Israeli high-tech and the workers in the industry slowly, when in the last quarter we witness the layoffs of thousands of workers, a halt in recruitment and a massive reduction in investments.

If you look at this year as a whole and not just focusing on its last months, you cannot see the effect substantially with 72,260 jobs in the industry.

But if we look at the last quarter, the company says, we can already see the decrease of 3.5% in the amount of jobs advertised compared to the 3rd quarter of 2022. In the month of December alone, decreases of approximately 8%-10% were recorded at the end of the year.

AllJobs predicts that during the next year we will continue to see the declines in the high-tech market, with a slow and controlled recruitment volume, especially in the core areas.

Examining the total number of jobs published on the AllJobs website in 2022 in the technological field, the software field leads, followed by the internet and digital fields, information systems and quality assurance:

software: about 40 thousand jobs (a decrease of about 4% compared to 2021)

information systems: an increase of 28% .

Systems analysis: 15% increase.

Quality assurance: 13% increase.

Severity: a decrease of about 15%.

Information security and cyber: an increase of about 4%.

Internet and digital: an increase of about 4%.

So what were the hottest jobs in the high-tech industry?

Software - Full Stack developers with about 5 thousand jobs, quality assurance and software QA people with about 4 thousand jobs, and then, in descending order: information systems and information system analysts, Internet, digital managers, cyber and information security/cyber managers, systems analysis Web and hardware engineers.

However, in the second half of the year 2022, the effect of the emerging recession also began on the high-tech market in Israel, the intensity of the decrease in the scope of jobs in high-tech in October-November is expressed in a slight to sharp decrease depending on the various areas of the industry.

In the field of software, which makes up about 54% of the jobs in the industry, we do not yet see a decrease in the October-November average, but based on the data from the beginning of December, we estimate that we will see the decrease in this area as well.

Information systems with a decrease of -0.5%, systems analysis with a decrease of -1.5%, QA quality assurance with a decrease of -5%.

Areas that recorded even sharper decreases: hardware with a decrease of 9%, information security and cyber with a decrease of 12% and Internet and digital with a decrease of 13.5%.

Among the significant figures of 2022: a great lack of teaching staff (Photo: ShutterStock)

A great shortage of workers in all fields, but especially in the field of teaching

Although the growth benefited the economy, it revealed gaps and areas with a very large shortage.

One of them is the field of teaching, which this year suffered from an incredible shortage of over 25,000 jobs in the field of education that remained unanswered, a decrease of only 1% from 2021. The leading positions are dormitory and kindergarten managers, kindergarteners, aides and nannies, and up to educational consultants and special education assistants.

The cities of Rishon Lezion, Herzliya and Netanya led the most demand.

The demand for workers in these fields has grown in the past year and reached numbers similar to 2019, on the eve of the Corona crisis.

During the crisis, in light of the many closures and the inactivity of the education system, about 2,000 jobs were reduced in all fields.

The return to routine and the increase in the cost of living lead many and many not to engage in these areas.

And if we thought that there was a shortage mainly of teachers and kindergarteners, we see that all the teaching staff are in a tremendous shortage.

Comparing the years 2019 to 2022, we see a decrease in the scope of demand for kindergarteners, assistants and nannies at a rate of decrease of 11.5% to 13%.

However, compared to the last school year, we see that there are increases in demand for all fields and in large numbers.

Kindergarten or daycare management with an increase of 18%, special education with an increase of about 44%%, kindergartens with an increase of 3%, assistants and nannies with an increase of 17% and in educational counseling an increase of 47%.

In total, we see that the scope of jobs in 2021 for the current year stands at a 14% increase in the scope of the various jobs and stands at 24,230 vacancies.

Israelis' reasons for relocation (Photo: Alljobs)

The political, security situation and the exit from the corona caused many to want and do relocation

In the past year, the percentage of Israelis who considered relocating increased to 69% compared to 46% last year.

82% of them are considering retraining for this purpose.

Among the factors influencing the decision is the desire to improve the economic situation - 60% as a significant factor compared to 50% last year.

50% for improving the quality of life and finding the balance between work and leisure, home and family, compared to 48%.

It is important to note that not really 70% of Israelis are really considering relocation, but this is a figure that society defines as a 'mood figure', which indicates a general sentiment in the population.

In addition, the feeling of disappointment is prominent, 31% testified that they are disappointed with the situation in the State of Israel and are therefore considering moving to another country, this compared to 24% last year.

20% of those who are undecided are considering the move 'because of the political situation in Israel'.

As in previous years, New York and Los Angeles continue to be at the top of the list of preferred cities, alongside an increase in preference for Europe.

And there was also a decrease in fear of anti-Semitism (7%) compared to 13% last year.

The great resignation, hybrid work, going independent - up to the wage increases and the disparities in the economy

A phenomenon that has made headlines in the US and Israel in the past year is the silent resignation. While according to the publications it was possible to get the impression that the employees stopped working or gave the minimum required, in Israel we saw a commitment to the workplace on the part of the employees but with a demand for a balance between home and work.

The topic of the silent resignation is a central concern , it is claimed that workers are tired of the long working hours, the demands to perform the tasks, the commitment on the part of the workers to the workplace and employers and the entry of work into leisure time in light of the changes in the labor market in the last two years and the combination of hybrid work from home and the workplace.

The silent resignation is not really a new concept, we all know it as a phenomenon of hidden unemployment or 'downsizing', in which the employee does the work required of him and no more, at best.

The very conceptualization of the phenomenon, combined with the post-corona period we are in, the combination of Generation Z and low unemployment, together create an excellent recipe for a viral trend that captures the headlines with a new message that is slowly trying to permeate the field.

At the same time, discourse separately and reality separately.

According to Israel, 88% of employees feel a high or very high commitment to the workplace.

Compared to the pre-corona period, then, 65% of employees testified that there is no change in their level of commitment to the workplace, then and now.

14% indicated that they were more committed in the past and 12% indicated that they are even more so today.

We see that the workers in Israel feel obligated and want to do their work to the best of their ability, and this after the corona crisis that led to layoffs and spending on sick leave on an unprecedented scale. In addition, the younger generation and probably the older generation also understand that the phenomenon is legitimate and that there is a need for balance, but not decisively and In the form of silent resignation.

Not a little of the silent resignation campaign stemmed from the desire for a work-home balance that many see today as a very important factor for them. More precisely, 65% of employees who define work-life balance. 40% more than in the pre-corona era. However, only 8 % of employees are not willing to work beyond their defined working hours, and only 2 out of every 10 dissatisfied employees who contact them outside of working hours.

With the strengthening of the trend of finding the balance, we see a big gap among working parents between what is desired and what is needed, with 55% of them being in a constant lack of days off.

Most workers today go on vacation without pay, 39%, in the absence of enough days off and only 18% are helped by grandparents or babysitters.

Hybrid work, from home or even remotely as a freelancer?

Many businesses have started in recent months to bring employees back to the office and reduce the scope of hybrid work.

But we see that the corona has left its mark on the employees: 11% of the employees testify that one of the reasons for looking for a job is the desire for a hybrid job.

In addition, it is interesting that only 48% of employees testify that hybrid work is not a factor in choosing a new workplace.

21% want to work one or more days from home, 31% would be happy to work from home but it is not mandatory.

Facing a year of economic slowdown, this is an important figure that can help in negotiation processes with new employees without adding to recruitment costs.

We also see that employees want to work from home, when the number of candidates for each such position increased to 64 candidates, compared to only 47 in 2021.

AllJobs, which operates, among other things, XPlace, the freelance website, reports that during the past year there was a 10% growth in the number of employees who decided to become independent and provide services as freelancers.

In the past year, with the lack of workers and the difficulty in recruiting, many employers turned to this professional service which is constantly increasing.

In the past year, 7,700 jobs were advertised that are also suitable for freelancers, where the most prominent areas were: human resources +47%, construction and infrastructure +31%, maintenance and professionals +13%, information systems +10%, design +9% and administration +5%.

High growth also in wages and gender gaps that continue

With the high growth, the transition from a market of employers to a market of workers who demanded better conditions and wages, we saw that in 2022 the average wage in the economy increased by 10%, continuing the gap of 33% between men and women.

However, the gap between men and women narrowed this year by 3%.

Admittedly a small gap, but the company notes that it undoubtedly heralds the beginning of a positive trend in the field.

The effects of the increases in demand for workers as a result of business growth are evident in almost every area of the labor market.

And at the same time the decrease in the scope of unemployment in Israel, also led to an increase in the scope of wages.

Today's workers demand higher wages and conditions, and the employers who are obsessed with quality workers fulfill the requirements.

The average salary in Israel rose to 12,810 NIS, but you can see the gap between the center and the periphery, which is about 2,000 NIS (the average salary in the center of the country is 13,740 NIS compared to 12,055 in the north and 11,245 in the south of the country).

But not only the geographical gap, also between women and men the gap continues, which stands at 33%.

Men earn NIS 13,295 on average, while women earn NIS 10,915.

A gap that can be explained by the type of work and the number of hours.

It is important to note that this is the first year in which women have crossed the 5-digit threshold and this is definitely a happy growth that is hopeful.
