The online mail order company Amazon has announced the closure of a large logistics center in Germany.

The US group wants to close the location in Brieselang near Berlin, as a company spokesman confirmed when asked by the dpa news agency.

This was communicated to the employees.

The research team Correctiv had previously reported on it.

Appropriate talks and negotiations on the closure of the plant have been started with the local works council.

The Brieselang logistics center was opened in 2013.

Around 600 people are employed there.

With them, possibilities should be explored to switch to other Amazon locations in Germany, the group said.

When asked by Correctiv, Amazon left unanswered how many jobs are specifically affected by the closure.

In early January, Amazon announced the largest job cuts in its history.

According to a memo to the employees, around 18,000 jobs should be eliminated.

In November there was talk of around 10,000 jobs, but further cuts had already been announced at the time.

The job cuts are the largest in the company's history.

Amazon had significantly increased its number of employees in the wake of the corona pandemic, when online trading soared.

In hindsight, that turned out to be an exaggeration.

Despite the possible job cuts, Amazon also announced on Tuesday that it intends to open two new logistics centers in Germany.

They are said to be "creating around 2,000 attractive new jobs over the next three years."

The location in Brieselang is a "relatively old building" that cannot be brought up to date, it said.

It offers no possibility for further development.

Unpleasant decisions for customers

The planned wave of layoffs at Amazon should initially primarily affect the loss-making device division around Echo smart speakers and the Alexa language assistant program.

But the job cuts also include other sectors.

In addition, the group had recently announced unpleasant decisions for its customers: the prices for the music folding rate were raised and the return of e-books was made more difficult.

Not only Amazon is currently having problems.

Recently, a number of technology companies had announced or implemented extensive job cuts.

According to Amazon, it currently operates 20 logistics locations in Germany.

In the German logistics network alone, there are "significantly more than 20,000 permanent" employees.
