A jump in the consumption of some product is often explained by a rapid increase in demand, in the field of food products the source can be, for example, the news that the same food has been found to be particularly good for health.
Another reason may be a crazy sale in one of the chains, a sharp drop in price, and more.
But the following consumer phenomenon is a bit difficult for us to explain: a sharp increase, at the level of dozens of tons, in the consumption of sunflower seeds.
The person who revealed the strange phenomenon is
Avichai Benisti, the manager of the Hamania chain
: "We recently released data for the first quarter of 2023 on all segments of the chain's products. One of the most unusual jumps was in the category of hamania seeds. From a more thorough examination we noticed that from January Until April, there was an inexplicable jump of tens of percent from month to month and hundreds of percent compared to data from previous years."

The astonished Benisti added: "Month to month. There is growth in general in all branches of the chain, but as far as the sunflower seeds are concerned, the growth here is unusual by any standard. We made comparisons with the corresponding months in previous years and did not see the jump as we are experiencing now."
Pay attention to the numbers:
in the first two weeks of April, 69 tons of sunflower seeds were sold online, compared to 25 tons in each month of April 2021 and 28 tons in 2022.
Even when referring to this year's data, one discovers a gradual but incredible jump: in January 2023 the chain sold 29 tons of sunflower seeds and in the months of February and March 2023 - 43 and 53 tons (respectively).
This is compared to 69 tons in the first two weeks of April this year!
Even when the Passover sales are subtracted from the data, these numbers are almost illogical, after all the holiday falls every year in one of the months of March or April.
We asked Benisti to try and think of a logical explanation for the phenomenon, given that it was not suddenly known that an increased consumption of sunflower seeds turned out to be a virtue for eternal life and also since there was no change in the price (on the contrary, the price of the raw material went up since Ukraine, which was at war, is one of the largest exporters of sunflower seeds).
"The logical explanation we reached on the internet is an increase in the level of stress and anxiety of the citizens of the country, and the cracking of nuclear weapons is a kind of certain and calming therapy. There is no doubt that when the level of nerves rises, people must release them. We will always prefer that the Israeli public prefer to do so in this natural way and, God forbid, in less acceptable ways." .
Of course, we don't have to accept this explanation as the only logical reason for the phenomenon, but at least at the moment it is the only explanation for the surprising figure.
So maybe there are businesses after all that the legal legislation actually does them good...
